World market leader 2020

Place in the ranking of the University of St. Gallen secured

Klasmann-Deilmann is listed as world market leader for the third time in succession. After 2018 and 2019, we are also the “champion” of the substrate industry for the year 2020 in the ranking of the University of St. Gallen, Henri B. Meier Entrepreneurs School and the Academy of German World Market Leaders.

In its issue of 14 October 2019, the magazine “Wirtschaftswoche” reports in detail on around 500 companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (so called DACH region) that have developed into the world’s leading companies in their respective market segments. The spectrum ranges from major global players such as Volkswagen with sales of over EUR 236 billion to smaller companies such as Amapharm, which generates annual sales of EUR 50 million with healthy fruit gums.

However, a company’s reputation and size do not play a significant role in the list. For as a world market leader, it is more important who meets these criteria:

  • A world market leader is No. 1 or at least No. 2 in one of its own business areas. At Klasmann-Deilmann, this is the business segment of growing media.
  • The annual turnover must be at least EUR 50 million. Klasmann-Deilmann generated EUR 220 million last year.
  • At least half of the annual turnover must be generated abroad on at least three continents. We have an export share of over 80% and are active on all continents.
  • At least 50% of the company’s owners are located in the DACH region. This applies 100% both to our shareholders and to Klasmann-Deilmann itself.

Around 1,500 potential candidates from the DACH region were closely scrutinised for the study. A third of them met the ranking criteria and can now call themselves “world market leaders”.
