ADVANCED Blueberry Substrates:
The ideal symbiosis for blueberries
Blueberries grow in natural symbiosis with mycorrhiza fungi and bacteria for improving the uptake of nutrients. Peat has been proved to significantly support this symbiosis. Our blueberry substrates therefore contain a higher proportion of quality sphagnum peat moss to allow best plant development and high yields.
Following comprehensive research, we have proved that substrates based on a combination of white sod peat and renewable GreenFibre® can lead to superior crop results compared with traditional mixtures consisting of one third each of milled peat, perlite and coir pith.
That is why we developed our ADVANCED Blueberry Substrates; well-balanced blends adjusted to any growing condition and with high long-term structural stability. The reduced amount of fine particles in the root zone leads to improved drainage and hence better root development. ADVANCED Blueberry Substrates are supplemented with perlite or coco where even better drainage is required.

Exclusive access: Our premium coco raw materials
Klasmann-Deilmann has direct and exclusive access to extensive coco raw materials in India and Sri Lanka and, through its close partnership with Shakti Cocos since 2020, to two specialised modern production facilities. This enables us to provide a foll portfolio of coco products for soft fruit cultivation and to secure the coir quantities required for the Klasmann-Deilmann Group for decades to come. Through our own activities in these countries of origin, we also improve the quality of this important raw material and further enhance local standards for responsibly produced coir.

Some examples of convincing crop results with ADVANCED blueberry substrates.
Blueberry grown in TS 4 coarse with perlite + GreenFibre® (U55), 7 months after potting. Perfect root development and first fruits ready for harvesting soon (Mexico)
Blueberry young plants freshly potted in TS 4 coarse (rec. U55) on the left and after just 12 weeks of cultivation on the right (South Africa)
Practical findings:
- The very open and porous substrate structure avoids a wet and muddy bottom layer
- Ensures homogeneous moisture in the entire root zone
- Better root development
- Ideal for use in 25 to 40 l containers for protected cultivation
- Perfectly suitable with 100 l containers for outdoor production
- No sign of shrinkage even in the third year of cultivation
Practical findings:
- Instant use for potting after filling the container, no washing or buffering needed
- Faster initial plant development compared with regular mixes.
- Better root development due to more homogeneous moisture in the root ball
- Ideal for use in 25 to 40 l containers for protected cultivation
- Perfectly suitable with 100 l containers for outdoor production
Own production: perlite
We have been producing our own high-quality perlite at our Silute site in Lithuania since 2022. This means that we are completely independent of external suppliers and thus increase the security of supply and price stability for this valuable substrate constituent.
