The new Growcoon in brown
The new Growcoon has a brown colouring. This optimises the visibility of the roots in automated propagation systems.
A new brown version of the proven Growcoon propagation system meets the increasing requirements of modern, automated plant production for enhanced contrast and better integration into camera-based inspection and grading processes.
Enhanced visibility for high-tech cultivation
Growers face rising demands in terms of precision, efficiency and digital process control. The newly introduced brown Growcoon improves the visual contrast between the propagation plug and the developing root system. This facilitates more reliable root quality assessments, both in manual inspection and in automated image recognition systems.
“This is a direct result of constructive dialogue with our customers,” says Raymond van Ispelen, Growcoon product manager at Klasmann-Deilmann “We regularly collect insights from growers across all horticultural segments – and the need for improved root visibility came through clearly. By adjusting the color of Growcoon, we’re helping our customers enhance their processes and meet future demands.”
Consistent performance, new appearance
The technical properties of the Growcoon remain unchanged. It continues to be manufactured from food-safe components, is 100% biodegradable and certified according to the EN 13432 standard with the “OK Compost” label. The brown colour blends naturally into most growing media, aligning visually with the sustainable profile of young plants grown with the Growcoon.
Positive feedback from the market
Initial reactions from growers are highly positive. Bart Feller from Driscoll’s Plants NL confirms: “Thanks to the brown colour, the roots are much more visible, allowing the plugs to be properly assessed and sorted both manually and automatically.” Jelle Broeders of Van der Avoird Trayplant adds: “ In addition to the sustainable appearance of the brown Growcoon, which matches its biodegradability, it also fits seamlessly into our automation process. In this process, we select plants based on root quality, among other things.“
Implementation underway at production level
Production at the Growcoon facility in Raalte has already fully transitioned to the brown variant. Only limited residual stocks of the green version remain available. From 2026 onwards, the Growcoon will be supplied exclusively in brown.
