Progress in responsible peat extraction

RPP certification further expanded

Klasmann-Deilmann continues to lead the way in the responsible use of peat harvesting areas. The development is encouraging: by the end of 2024, 93.9% of our total peat extraction areas were already certified according to the “Responsibly Produced Peat” (RPP) environmental standard. This also means that 97.5% of our harvested volumes come from RPP-certified areas – a significant increase compared to 2022 (92%).

RPP stands for particularly responsible management of peatland sites. Only areas that have already been drained or previously used for agriculture are eligible for certification. The certification includes strict guidelines for the selection, use, and restoration of extraction sites. The aim is to permanently preserve natural peatlands with high nature and climate protection value, which is why they are generally excluded from peat extraction and RPP certification.

Klasmann-Deilmann has been involved in the RPP initiative for many years and was one of the first companies to obtain certification to this standard on a large scale. Our harvesting sites are regularly inspected by independent auditors on behalf of the certification body ECAS.

We also take responsibility after peat extraction: around 5,000 hectares of rewetted land are now permanently available for nature and climate protection.
This development shows that our commitment to sustainability is measurable, verifiable, and geared toward continuous improvement.
