Peat-reduced substrate solutions for tomorrow’s horticulture
Klasmann-Deilmann’s new generation of ADVANCED Blocking Substrates impresses with its high performance and reduced emissions
As the international horticulture industry increasingly turns to more climate-friendly and sustainable methods, Klasmann-Deilmann continues to set new standards with its ADVANCED Substrate range. The company is focusing on peat-reduced growing media for any application, and hence also for blocking substrates for vegetable young plants. ADVANCED Substrates offer an excellent balance between cultivation performance and a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
Press pots with 20% peat substitute are well-established and proven
ADVANCED Blocking Substrates, such as Potgrond H80 + GreenFibre®, have quickly become the new standard for conventional vegetable propagation. With 20% GreenFibre® wood fibre in an extra-fine structure, they provide the ideal stability for use in automated blocking lines and ensure uniform seedling growth, particularly in smaller block sizes such as 3.7 x 3.7 cm.
“These substrates are the result of our many years of experience in organic cultivation and our use of alternative raw materials in this area,” says Linda Esters, Technical Advisor at Klasmann-Deilmann. “All our ADVANCED Substrates are fully RHP-certified, crop-safe and nutritionally optimised, regardless of their peat content.”
Up to 70% peat substitution in blocking substrates possible
For special, customer-specific applications and requirements, Klasmann-Deilmann has successfully increased the proportion of renewable and circular raw materials to 50%, while ensuring excellent crop results. Our R&D team has even achieved a peat substitution of 70%, which is particularly suitable for larger 10 × 10 cm press pots and is already being used in practice.
These recipes contain the constituents GreenFibre® extra fine, TerrAktiv® green compost, TerrAktiv® FT and a special, high-quality frozen-trough black peat. All these components contribute to strong plant development and reliable growths results, even under demanding conditions.
TerraCoal®: our new biochar as carbon sink
One of the latest innovations from Klasmann-Deilmann is TerraCoal®, a high-quality biochar which has recently been introduced to the blocking substrate range. It improves the buffering capacity and microbial activity in the root zone, while also serving as a long-term carbon sink in growing media. „With TerraCoal®, we are taking a big step towards climate-neutral substrates,“ explains Linda Esters. „This new technology enables us to significantly reduce emissions and produce substrates with a smaller ecological footprint.“
We support growers worldwide in switching to more modern, sustainable growing media and cultivation systems. Our global technical team offers expert advice on crop management, plant nutrition, and pH regulation. This advice is always tailored to the specific needs of each grower and cultivation system.
