Innovative growing solutions

TerraCoal® and ADVANCED Substrates: Towards climate-neutral growing media

The ADVANCED Substrate range continues to set standards in peat-reduced and peat-free growing media. By combining renewable raw materials such as GreenFibre®, TerrAktiv® and coir, these substrates ensure reliable crop performance while significantly lowering emissions.

A key innovation is TerraCoal®, a next-generation biochar produced through a pyrolysis process. It acts as a long-term carbon sink, improves substrate properties and enables the development of growing media with a net-zero carbon footprint. The climate benefits associated with TerraCoal® can only be claimed when a corresponding CO₂ certificate is purchased. These certificates provide additional transparency for growers and support the optimisation of their corporate carbon footprints.

Vegetable propagation

In vegetable propagation, blocking substrates with GreenFibre® and TerraCoal® ensure high stability, excellent water retention and strong root development, while also delivering measurable CO₂ savings.

Fruit and vegetable cultivation

In fruit and vegetable cultivation, the Growbag ADVANCED with TerraCoal® and regional renewable raw materials enables climate-friendly production with high performance.

Ornamental plants

Ornamental plants benefit from ADVANCED Substrates, which can be supplied with a CO₂ certificate, thus creating transparent sustainability profiles for retailers.

Strawberries and soft fruits

For strawberries and soft fruits in containers and pots, special mixtures with TerraCoal® ensure excellent crop dynamics – thus supporting sustainable production in closed-loop systems.

Knowledge exchange and technical expertise

As part of the GreenTech programme, Sebastian Kipp, will present a technical session on 9 June at 14:00 titled:

“New solutions for reduction of CO₂ emissions in growing media.”

The presentation will focus on the role of innovative substrate components in reducing and compensating emissions along the horticultural value chain. Particular attention will be given to TerraCoal® as a carbon-storing material and its contribution to climate-neutral production systems.
