The coronavirus pandemic has changed our lives. Many companies are being pushed to their limits at this time – including those in commercial horticulture. The strong partner that we are, Klasmann-Deilmann is continuing to stand shoulder to shoulder with them. The last few weeks have resulted in developments that could shape the future of horticulture.

“We do not belong in a home office,” says Linda Rakers, Technical Consultant at Klasmann-Deilmann. “Where we belong is beside our customers at their nurseries.” We are now seeing, however, there are in fact other options. Crucially, the coronavirus crisis is showing that modern IT can help to enable close cooperation, even at a distance. “The level of acceptance is increasing.”

The coronavirus pandemic is driving forward digital approaches to business management. In the Netherlands, our “Innovations Team” is developing solutions to take horticulture into the future. Sjors Beijer has made significant advances with the online platform Log & Solve. He explains how this software boosts the efficiency of a given growing method and reduces failure rates.

Despite the coronavirus: #stayinghome is not an option for Klasmann-Deilmann’s production operations. Employees working on the peatland railway, loading vehicles or the mixing facility are indispensable. They not only ensure a continuing supply of growing media – they keep the horticultural sector going.

Horticultural companies are of crucial importance for the food industry – and that means growing media play a central role in the cultivation of vegetable young plants, for example. We are advocating that the transport of growing media remains permissible during the coronavirus crisis; otherwise, vegetable growers throughout the world will be unable to uphold production.
