Why Klasmann-Deilmann documents every batch
Quality is no coincidence – it is the result of controlled processes. At Klasmann-Deilmann, the storage of so-called reserve samples is therefore one of our established standards. A sample from each individual production batch is stored securely – as an expression of our comprehensive understanding of quality, to support our certifications and as a reliable reference in the event of any complaints.
Traceability guaranteed
At all production sites, the quality assurance teams receive a bag containing the respective substrate from each batch. The retained sample is clearly labelled, archived and usually stored for six months. This means that it is possible to trace at any time which product with which properties was manufactured at what point in time. The systematic management of these samples is, among other things, an integral part of the RHP certification, which our company has held for many years.
Two warehouses, one goal: maximum traceability
At our headquarters in Geeste, for example, we operate two specially equipped warehouses for retention samples:
- an unheated warehouse (< 21 °C) for regular samples
- a second, refrigerated warehouse (3–5 °C) for sealed retention samples
The refrigeration and sealing serve a clear purpose: The samples should accurately reflect the condition of the substrate at the time of production – without any microbiological changes. In this context, sealed means that each sample is stored in tamper-proof packaging and could even serve as legally admissible evidence in case of doubt. In times of increasing regulatory requirements, this is an important aspect of reassurance for us and our customers.

Retention samples are much more than a technical detail. They are an integral part of our comprehensive quality assurance system – as are compliance with international standards, independent laboratory analyses and internal testing mechanisms. In this way, they support our goal of offering our customers culture substrates with reliable quality and the greatest possible safety.
