New alternative constituent

Klasmann-Deilmann expands variety of raw materials

Klasmann-Deilmann continues to make good progress in its search for safe and available alternative raw materials for substrate production. The aim is to increase their share of total annual production to at least 30% by volume till 2025. To this end, proven constituents such as GreenFibre, TerrAktiv green compost, TerrAktiv FT, perlite and coir are to be supplemented with new raw materials to ensure that the required quantities can always be provided. This applies in particular to ADVANCED substrates, whose potential will be further developed in the coming years.

Against this background, Klasmann-Deilmann is now introducing “TerrAktiv Bark Humus”. The tree bark, composted according to RHP standards, will henceforth be used in various growing media.

The raw material

The tree bark for the production of TerrAktiv bark humus comes from sawmills where coniferous trees are debarked. The coarse bark pieces are shredded and prepared for composting. In the process, a so-called converter ensures aeration and mixing of the material.

Optimal properties

The new renewable raw material from Klasmann-Deilmann

  • has a stable pore structure
  • has a positive effect on the aeration and drainage of substrates
  • creates a balanced water balance and
  • has a good rewetting capacity.

TerrAktiv bark humus is a strong buffer for pH and nutrients. The high natural microbial activity suppresses the occurrence of diseases and supports the release of nutrients from organic fertilizers. It also expands the possibilities for increased peat replacement in substrates for organic farming as well as in peat-free substrates.

Unlike green and organic compost, TerrAktiv bark humus has a low pH and salt content. In addition, the material is lighter than green compost – therefore optimal properties for the use in our growing media.
